STOP THE STAFFING CUTS FOR MONTCLAIR FIRE DEPARTMENT

"Consider the impact on local schools, businesses, and seniors. Fire department staffing does not just affect those directly saved from fires but plays a crucial role in community-wide safety preparations and emergency management. A delay can be catastrophic, resulting in preventable loss of life and property."

KEY TAKE AWAYS

"Staffing shortfalls are a central theme. The roster has declined over recent years and vacancies in key leadership and administrative roles have not been consistently filled." - Page 2

"Training and professional development are constrained by the same staffing pressures that affect operations." - Page 4

"The department is currently budgeted for 77 firefighters, with an actual staffing level of 70. Fire Officials report that the department was budgeted for 89 members in 2020. There are currently a number of vacancies in the ranks." - Page 22

"Recommendation 1: Initial response of adequate staffing levels should be addressed through increased staffing levels and development of automatic aid response to fires and emergencies within the fire protection coverage area." - Page 45

"Based on the time interval from the most recent ISO evaluation (2017), Montclair should anticipate an updated review soon. It should also be anticipated that the reduction of personnel from 87 in 2017 to the current staffing level of 70 may result in a rating reduction." - Page 113
